Ruhullah announces decision to quit NC, resign as Srinagar MP
Nov-03-2026

Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi announced his decision to quit the ruling National Conference (NC) and resign as Member of Parliament (MP) from Srinagar, accusing the NC leadership of abandoning the commitments it had made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir at a public rally in Budgam marking the 26th death anniversary of his father.

In his resignation letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Ruhullah said he had aligned himself more vigorously with the NC after the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A in 2019, hoping that the party would lead a movement for the restoration of people's rights. He said the party's massive mandate in the 2024 Assembly elections had raised people's expectations, but alleged that the NC later changed its political stance.

Ruhullah said he was particularly hurt by what he described as the party's failure to carry forward the struggle for rights, adding that it had instead focused on governance and what he termed a vague promise of statehood restoration. Declaring that his conscience would not allow him to be part of such a course, he resigned from the party, pledging to continue serving the people of J&K while remaining guided by his principles, faith and values.

Ruhullah is a three-time MLA from Budgam and a former minister. He won the Assembly seat in three consecutive elections between 2002 and 2014. In 2024, he contested the Lok Sabha election from the Srinagar constituency and won by a comfortable margin.
