Post Session: Quick Review
Oct-28-2026

The Wednesday’s trading session remained sluggish for Indian equity markets, with the Sensex and Nifty ending lower amid heightened global uncertainties and higher crude oil prices. After witnessing sharp losses in early deals, indices staged recovery in noon deals but failed to trade above their neutral lines, as weakness in information technology stocks weighed heavily on benchmark indices, while concerns ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision kept investors cautious.

Some of the important factors in trade:

India hopes to boost exports to China, ASEAN in coming years: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that India is open to Chinese suppliers meeting its growing import needs, even as it will take action through established legal processes against any unfair pricing. He expressed hope that India would become a major exporter to China and the ASEAN region in the coming years.

RBI Governor urges states to adopt prudent borrowing, quality spending for fiscal stability: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra has urged state governments to adopt prudent borrowing strategies, improve the quality of public expenditure and strengthen cash management practices to safeguard their fiscal health over the longer term.

India, Mexico ink ToR to launch negotiations on Preferential Trade Agreement: With an aim of deepening India-Mexico economic and trade relations, both countries have signed Terms of Reference (ToR) for negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).

Mixed global cues: European markets were trading mostly in red, while Asian markets ended mostly higher. Traders awaited the 2026 U.K. autumn budget, earnings from big tech companies and the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision.

The BSE Sensex ended at 73246.03, down by 352.64 points or 0.48% after trading in a range of 72603.57 and 73525.44. There were 9 stocks advancing against 21 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Auto up by 1.34%, Healthcare up by 1.07%, Industrials up by 0.87%, Consumer Durables up by 0.69% and Consumer Disc up by 0.56%, while Energy down by 2.26%, Oil & Gas down by 2.09%, Telecom down by 2.07%, TECK down by 1.84% and IT down by 1.77% were the top losing indices on BSE. (Provisional)

The top gainers on the Sensex were Larsen & Toubro up by 3.78%, Interglobe Aviation up by 1.59%, Trent up by 1.51%, State Bank of India up by 1.17% and Maruti Suzuki India up by 0.70%. On the flip side, Infosys down by 4.23%, Reliance Industries down by 3.36%, TCS down by 2.22%, HCL Technologies down by 1.93% and Tata Steel down by 1.92% were the top losers. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, rating agency Icra in its latest report has said that Fresh non-performing assets (NPA) in the banking sector are expected to increase during the current fiscal (FY27), with private sector banks expected to face relatively higher pressure due to their exposure to unsecured retail and micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) loans.

It expects the trend of relatively higher loan slippages at private sector banks to continue in the second half of FY27, even as credit costs are projected to remain favourable and significantly below historical levels. According to its estimates, the fresh NPA generation rate for public sector banks is expected to stand at 0.8 per cent in FY27, compared with 2.5 per cent for private sector banks.

In absolute terms, fresh NPA is estimated at Rs 1 lakh crore in FY27 for state-owned banks and Rs 1.3 lakh crore for private banks. It attributed the relatively higher slippages at private sector banks over the past two years to their higher share of unsecured retail and MSME loans. Despite the anticipated increase in fresh bad-loan generation, it expects the banking sector will continue to report healthy profitability, supported by favourable credit costs and adequate capitalisation.

Besides, the agency projected the banking sector's gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio at 1.7-1.8 per cent by March 2027 from 1.7 per cent in June 2026. The net NPA ratio is expected to remain at 0.4-0.5 per cent against 0.4 per cent in June 2026. According to the rating agency, bank credit growth to remain healthy at 15.1-15.9 per cent in FY2027, translating into incremental credit of Rs 32.3-33.8 lakh crore.

The CNX Nifty ended at 22698.85, down by 50.90 points or 0.22% after trading in a range of 22497.70 and 22778.05. There were 26 stocks advancing against 24 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gainers on Nifty were Apollo Hospital up by 4.43%, Larsen & Toubro up by 3.72%, Trent up by 3.31%, SBI Life Insurance up by 2.06% and Interglobe Aviation up by 2.03%. On the flip side, Infosys down by 3.43%, Reliance Industries down by 3.19%, ONGC down by 2.16%, Tech Mahindra down by 1.92% and Bharti Airtel down by 1.55% were the top losers. (Provisional)

European markets were trading mostly in red; UK’s FTSE 100 decreased 34.6 points or 0.32% to 10,651.94 and France’s CAC fell 6.04 points or 0.08% to 7,881.10, while Germany’s DAX gained 0.63 points or 0% to 25,591.40.

Asian markets settled higher on Wednesday, buoyed by an AI-fuelled rally on Wall Street. South Korea’s Kospi surged above 6% as revived optimism over artificial intelligence demand and strong earnings from chipmaker SK hynix lifted investor sentiment. Global investors were monitoring the 20th Central Committee's Fifth Plenum, which concludes on Thursday, October 29, 2026, for further policy signals and clarity on China's economic priorities. Meanwhile, market participants awaited the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision with expectations of a pause, but sticky services inflation and a relentless climb in long-term US Treasury yields kept the possibility of a December rate hike alive, adding structural borrowing pressures to the broader market.
