Benchmarks continue to trade below neutral lines in late afternoon deals
Oct-28-2026

Indian equity markets managed to recover most of their earlier losses in the late-afternoon session as traders picked up beaten-down stocks following recent weakness in the markets. Further, fresh capital inflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) uplifted the trading sentiments. FIIs were the net buyers on Tuesday’s session, buying securities worth Rs 4,240.39 crore. Despite the recovery, markets continued to trade in negative territory as elevated global crude oil prices continued to weigh on risk sentiments. The Brent crude oil prices were trading above $115 a barrel mark after attack on Saudi Arabia’s refinery fuelled supply concerns.

Both Sensex and Nifty were trading below the neutral lines, as Sensex faced selling pressure amid weakness in oil & gas, IT and metal stocks. Meanwhile, strong buying among healthcare and hospital, utility, and pharmaceutical stocks has helped Nifty to trim losses.

On the global front, Asian equity markets were trading mostly in green tracking positive cues from Wall Street overnight amid renewed optimism over artificial intelligence demand. European equity markets were trading lower as market participants await cues from tech earnings and the upcoming Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 73272.79, down by 325.88 points or 0.44% after trading in a range of 72603.57 and 73525.44. There were 14 stocks advancing against 16 stocks declining on the index.

Meanwhile, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said that India has faced no pressure from the United States (US) to reduce its imports of Russian crude. He said Indian refiners would purchase crude from suppliers offering the most competitive prices, with energy security remaining a key priority amid global market uncertainties. He added that India was not particularly sourcing Russian oil at present, but the decisions in this regard were guided by commercial considerations rather than pressure from any country.

The minister's remarks come amid growing international scrutiny of India's Russian crude purchases and Western efforts to restrict Moscow's oil revenues following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Referring to the restrictions imposed on two Russian entities, Rosneft and Lukoil, Puri said buyers could source oil from other suppliers, including those in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He also highlighted India's diversified energy investments and sourcing strategy, including investments in Saudi Arabia and other locations.

He stressed that India, as one of the world's major energy-consuming nations, could not compromise on its energy security amid geopolitical tensions and volatility in international markets. He also pointed out the complexity of global oil and petroleum-product trade, and noted that procurement decisions involved several commercial and supply considerations. India's approach was guided by the need to ensure reliable supplies while managing costs for consumers and the broader economy.
