Key gauges end flat amid volatility
Oct-27-2026

Indian equity benchmarks ended largely unchanged in a highly volatile trade on Tuesday amid persistently elevated crude oil prices, selling in blue-chip bank stocks and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision. Some pessimism came as Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) returned to selling in the cash market after a day's break, selling shares worth Rs 1,462.49 crore on October 26.

Some of the important factors in trade:

Centre committed to fiscal consolidation, targets public debt at 50% of GDP by 2030: Highlighting the government’s aim to cap the national debt at 50% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has reiterated the Centre’s commitment to fiscal consolidation, citing annual budgets as evidence of its efforts to rein in the fiscal deficit.

India, US conclude most of discussions for proposed bilateral trade pact: Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said that most of the discussions between India and the US on the proposed bilateral trade deal have been completed, and the two sides are now fine-tuning the agreement.

Overseas investments by Indian firms dip 14% in September 2026: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its latest report has showed that India's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) commitments declined by 13.96% to $4,344.33 million in September 2026 as against $5,049.32 million in September 2025, with decline in loan and guarantee commitments.

Defence stocks remain in focus: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) i.e. in-principle administrative to various capital acquisition proposals of the Defence Forces at an estimated cost of about Rs 2.12 lakh crore.

Global front: European markets were trading mostly in green, while Asian markets ended mixed on Tuesday as investors awaited earnings from major U.S. technology companies and the outcome of a slew of central bank meetings this week for direction.

Finally, the BSE Sensex fell 8.08 points or 0.01% to 73,598.67 and the CNX Nifty was down by 3.45 points or 0.02% to 22,749.75.

Meanwhile, highlighting the government’s aim to cap the national debt at 50% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has reiterated the Centre’s commitment to fiscal consolidation, citing annual budgets as evidence of its efforts to rein in the fiscal deficit. Addressing concerns over rising debt, she noted that all countries have faced debt-related challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic. She added “We are consistently putting in place measures to reduce the Union Government’s debt, and international organisations have acknowledged India’s disciplined approach to debt management.”

On inflation management, she noted that a dedicated group of ministers has been working since 2014 to ensure price stability through efficient supply chain management. Citing targeted interventions, such as restrictions on rice exports, she emphasised that the Centre had successfully shielded domestic consumers from price hikes while ensuring that farmers received the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Commenting on democratic dissent, she remarked that approaching courts through legal channels and holding street protests are both established means used by various opposition groups to seek justice.

On per capita income, she said, “We are implementing various measures to increase it. Despite global challenges such as the pandemic, economic recovery efforts, wars, and fluctuations in fuel and crude oil prices, we have worked to ensure these burdens do not fall heavily on the public. We are definitely continuing our efforts in this direction.”

Asian markets ended mixed on Tuesday as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of earnings from major US technology companies and critical central bank policy decisions due later this week. Besides, Brent crude prices continued to trade near $115 a barrel mark weighed on market sentiments. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Kospi rallied after the release of stronger-than-expected GDP data for the third quarter. Japanese markets rose sharply, tracking Wall Street’s gains overnight and a wave of renewed optimism over artificial intelligence following AI startup Anthropic's US IPO filing. Sentiment was further boosted by large tech fundraising efforts, including Meta Platforms' massive equity financing plans.
