Key gauges snap 4-day losing run; Nifty tops 22,750 mark
Oct-26-2026

Snapping a four-day losing streak, Indian equity benchmarks staged a sharp recovery and ended with gains of over half percent each on Monday, driven by value buying and rally in Metal, Telecom and Healthcare stocks. However, elevated crude prices, geopolitical uncertainty and caution ahead of the Fed, ECB and BoJ policy decisions kept sentiment measured.

Some of the important factors in trade:

India, Uzbekistan emphasise timely implementation of bilateral agreements: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Uzbek counterpart, Bakhtiyor Saidov, discussed key issues on the bilateral agenda during a meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, and emphasised the need for the timely implementation of agreements reached at the highest level.

German companies view India as manufacturing, R&D & innovation hub: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that German companies are increasingly viewing India as a strategic destination for manufacturing, research and development (R&D), and innovation, while also acknowledging its importance as a major consumer market.

Strong macroeconomic fundamentals, policy interventions help cushion India against global headwinds: The article published in the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) October Bulletin has said that strong macroeconomic fundamentals and targeted policy interventions are helping cushion India against global headwinds, including rising inflation due to the West Asia crisis and ongoing trade tensions.

FICCI seeks greater Dutch investment in India’s manufacturing, technology, supply chain sectors: Industry body FICCI has called for greater Dutch investment in India’s manufacturing and technology sectors, while pitching for joint ventures, technology partnerships and supplier-development programmes to deepen bilateral economic ties.

Global front: European markets were trading higher as oil prices fell amid diplomatic efforts to reduce West Asia tensions. Asian markets settled mostly lower ahead of earnings from major U.S. technology companies due this week.

Finally, the BSE Sensex rose 482.92 points or 0.66% to 73,606.75 and the CNX Nifty was up by 153.20 points or 0.68% to 22,753.20.

The BSE Sensex touched high and low of 73,606.75 and 72,514.57, respectively. There were 25 stocks advancing against 5 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Metal up by 2.55%, Telecom up by 2.07%, Healthcare up by 1.85%, Oil & Gas up by 1.59% and Energy up by 1.49%, while there was no losing sectoral index on the BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Adani Ports &SEZ up by 2.72%, Eternal up by 2.56%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 2.53%, Trent up by 1.73% and Tata Steel up by 1.52%. On the flip side, Bajaj Finance down by 0.76%, HDFC Bank down by 0.56%, Maruti Suzuki India down by 0.52%, HCL Technologies down by 0.42% and Power Grid down by 0.24% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the article published in the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) October Bulletin has said that strong macroeconomic fundamentals and targeted policy interventions are helping cushion India against global headwinds, including rising inflation due to the West Asia crisis and ongoing trade tensions. It said renewed geopolitical frictions in West Asia and supply chain disruptions have amplified inflationary pressures, prompting major central banks to raise policy rates. It said elevated sovereign bond yields in advanced economies (AEs) have also brought into focus concerns about fiscal sustainability and its implications for financial stability.

The article on 'State of the Economy' noted that Indian economy continued to demonstrate strength, as evidenced by high-frequency indicators across industry and services. The headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation edged up in September driven by a broad-based increase in food, fuel, and core components. Double-digit growth in merchandise exports during the first six months of 2026-27 helped in narrowing the trade deficit. FDI, ECB and remittance flows strengthened in August. Strong inflows under the FCNR(B) swap window augmented reserves. It further said rising inflationary pressures induced by the West Asia crisis and recurrent trade tensions, alongside multi-decade-high sovereign bond yields, elevated public debt, and broader fiscal sustainability concerns are looming large. Some silver linings are evident in the form of positive technology shocks and related dividends from AI. It added that despite being a net energy importer, GDP growth has been supported by sustained domestic demand and services.

The article also said the rupee exhibited a depreciating bias since late September owing to a stronger US dollar and surging crude oil prices. The domestic currency appreciated subsequently in mid-October, supported by the Reserve Bank's measures to curb speculative dollar demand and a softer greenback. FDI flows continued to remain robust in August 2026, supported by strong gross inflows and moderation in outward FDI. Communication, miscellaneous services and manufacturing received more than two-thirds of the FDI inflows. The central bank said the views expressed in the Bulletin article are those of the authors and do not represent the views of the Reserve Bank of India.

CNX Nifty touched high and low of 22,753.20 and 22,387.35, respectively. There were 37 stocks advancing against 13 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Dr. Reddy's Labs. up by 6.62%, JSW Steel up by 6.28%, BSE up by 3.97%, Adani Ports &SEZ up by 2.92% and Eternal up by 2.57%. On the flip side, Shriram Finance down by 4.62%, Tata Consumer Products down by 2.84%, Bajaj Finance down by 1.10%, HDFC Life Insurance down by 0.91% and HDFC Bank down by 0.69% were the top losers.

European markets were trading higher; UK’s FTSE 100 increased 50.33 points or 0.47% to 10,740.69, France’s CAC rose 61.38 points or 0.79% to 7,844.20 and Germany’s DAX gained 220.35 points or 0.88% to 25,402.00.

Asian markets settled mostly lower on Monday, tracking Wall Street’s fall last Friday and as investors awaited a crucial week packed with high-profile corporate tech earnings and monetary policy decisions from major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan, and the European Central Bank. Besides, renewed tensions in the Middle East weighed on market sentiment. South Korea’s Kospi fell sharply after private brokerages slashed 12-month target for the benchmark index from 12,000 to 9,000 (a 25% reduction), citing more conservative valuation assumptions as the AI-driven tech rally cools.

However, Chinese shares gained, recovering from an earlier dip driven by anxieties surrounding weakening domestic consumption and growth. Investors also shifted their focus on the Fifth Plenum, running from Monday through Thursday, during which President Xi Jinping opened the meeting and called for firm governance measures. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese stock market was closed in observance of Taiwan Restoration Day.
