Sensex outperforms Nifty in early deals
Oct-23-2026

Indian equity markets have made positive start on Friday after US 10-year Treasury yield tumbled below 5% to lowest level in nearly a month. Some support came in as India and Poland have agreed to deepen ties in defence, space, and nuclear energy domains, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk pledging to double the annual bilateral trade from the current $6 billion by 2030. However, cautiousness prevailed in the markets as crude oil prices surged amid concerns over further disruptions to energy supplies following Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, a major oil exporter.

The Sensex outperformed the Nifty in early trade, gaining 0.40% on account of buying in index heavyweights such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Reliance Industries. In contrast, the Nifty registered marginal gains of 0.01%. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mixed following mostly negative cues from US markets overnight. Meanwhile, overall consumer prices in Japan were up 2.1% on year in September, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said on Friday - in line with expectations and up from 1.9% in August.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 73545.20, up by 295.81 points or 0.40% after trading in a range of 73378.47 and 73766.51. There were 12 stocks advancing against 18 stocks declining on the index.

The only gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were IT up by 1.75% and TECK up by 1.32%, while Capital Goods down by 2.11%, Power down by 2.10%, Utilities down by 1.59%, Metal down by 1.54% and Industrials down by 1.54% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were TCS up by 3.16%, Infosys up by 2.45%, Reliance Industries up by 1.41%, HCL Technologies up by 1.37% and Larsen & Toubro up by 1.32%. On the flip side, Tata Steel down by 2.05%, Titan Company down by 1.83%, Adani Ports down by 1.73%, Bharat Electronics down by 1.43% and Interglobe Aviation down by 1.34% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has assured global investors that India provides a stable and predictable business environment and emphasised that businesses investing and expanding in the country would not face the uncertainties seen in other parts of the world. He said that the world is fragmented today and trust is a scarce commodity. But India, he said, ensures a fair play for every investor, business person, and trader.

Goyal also said that India has finalised nine free trade agreements (FTAs), covering 38 countries, whose combined gross domestic product (GDP) exceeds $60 trillion. He noted that India, before 2014, entered into some free trade agreements, including with Singapore. But collectively, all those free trade agreements covered a GDP of $10 trillion.

The minister said India is negotiating FTAs with a host of countries and blocs, including Canada, Israel, the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council), Mexico, the SACU (Southern African Customs Union) region, Brazil-led Mercosur, and Russia-led Eurasia. He said ‘all of these economies collectively will add $15 trillion. So I would have opened the doors of India and opened Indian businesses, getting opportunities in GDP of $85 trillion out of a global GDP of $115 trillion. That’s 76 per cent of global GDP that will be open to Indian businesses.’

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22689.70, up by 2.05 points or 0.01% after trading in a range of 22663.75 and 22787.25. There were 17 stocks advancing against 33 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were TCS up by 3.06%, Infosys up by 2.25%, HCL Technologies up by 1.85%, Apollo Hospital up by 0.99% and Tata Consumer up by 0.72%.
