Local equities extend gains in morning deals
Oct-15-2026

Indian equity benchmarks extended gains in morning deals led by a rally in TECK, IT and Auto stocks and easing crude oil prices. Traders took encouragement with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra's statement that recent RBI measures, including the creation of a special dollar window for oil marketing companies (OMCs), aim to ensure orderly movements in the foreign exchange market and curb undue speculative activity. Some support also came with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s statement that negotiations on the India-US trade deal were heading towards a ‘landing point’, with officials from both countries working to iron out outstanding issues. On the global front, Asian markets were trading lower, following the broadly negative cues from Wall Street overnight, after hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data revived bets on interest rate hikes by the US Fed that prompted a sell-off in technology and semiconductor stocks.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 73803.38, up by 1021.49 points or 1.40% after trading in a range of 72896.38 and 73820.10. There were 26 stocks advancing against 4 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were TECK up by 2.18%, IT up by 1.83%, Auto up by 1.56%, Realty up by 1.19% and Bankex up by 0.76%, while Capital Goods down by 1.37%, Power down by 1.30%, Industrials down by 0.89%, Utilities down by 0.33% and PSU down by 0.29% were the top losing indices on BSE.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in a draft notification said that it is planning to introduce stricter BS-VII emission standards for new cars and SUVs from April 1, 2029. The ministry said that it will implement all new norms in three phases spanning six years, from April 2029 to April 2035. The first phase will be implemented from April 2029, the second from April 2031, and the third from April 2035.

The proposed norms set stricter limits for harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and particulate matter, and will not affect existing vehicles or their life, including those compliant with BS-VI standards. BS, or Bharat Stage, refers to India's vehicle emission standards that set limits on pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter (PM).

These standards are aligned with European emission norms and are enforced to gradually phase out vehicles that emit higher levels of pollutants. In India, BS-VI is in force since April 2020. To accelerate pollution reduction, India skipped the BS-V stage and adopted BS-VI norms directly. These standards reduce pollutant emissions and require the use of low-sulphur fuel.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22927.95, up by 305.25 points or 1.35% after trading in a range of 22637.40 and 22930.90. There were 43 stocks advancing against 7 stocks declining on the index.
