Sensex, Nifty trade higher with notable gains in early deals
Oct-15-2026

Indian equity benchmarks made a positive start on Thursday as investors tracked corporate earnings and falling crude oil prices. Traders assessed potential supply disruptions following attacks on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while digesting the International Energy Agency’s latest monthly report on the outlook of the oil market.

Sensex and Nifty were trading higher with notable gains in early deals following buying momentum in TECK, IT and Banking stocks. Investors turned their attention to corporate earnings, with Wipro scheduled to announce its September-quarter results later in the day.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading lower amid a global rout in the tech stocks. The US tech stocks fell after stronger-than-expected inflation numbers prompted investors to book profits in the overheated sectors and themes like AI, data centres and chip making. The elevated inflation levels also increased the bets on imminent rate hikes in the coming policy meeting.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 73283.18, up by 501.29 points or 0.69% after trading in a range of 72896.38 and 73351.44. There were 17 stocks advancing against 13 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were TECK up by 1.86%, IT up by 1.74%, FMCG up by 0.32%, Bankex up by 0.16% and Healthcare up by 0.13%, while Power down by 1.66%, Capital Goods down by 1.64%, Industrials down by 1.26%, PSU down by 1.04% and Utilities down by 0.91% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Tech Mahindra up by 2.93%, TCS up by 2.56%, Infosys up by 2.34%, Bharti Airtel up by 1.59% and ICICI Bank up by 1.56%. On the flip side, Bharat Electronics down by 0.90%, Trent down by 0.85%, Power Grid down by 0.78%, Bajaj Finserv down by 0.69% and Adani Ports & SEZ down by 0.66% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra has said that recent RBI measures, including the creation of a special dollar window for oil marketing companies (OMCs), aim to ensure orderly movements in the foreign exchange market and curb undue speculative activity. Recently, the RBI tightened rules governing forex derivative trades to curtail speculative bets against the rupee and asked banks to set aside a 20 per cent reserve for dollar purchases. The special window for three state-owned OMCs, which are among the largest consumers of dollars due to their crude oil import requirements, was introduced following an assessment of prevailing market conditions. The rupee has been appreciating against the US dollar since October 9, 2026.

Malhotra said the RBI is determined to do whatever is necessary to ensure orderly movements in the foreign exchange market. He said the primary objective of these measures is to maintain orderly conditions in the forex market. The reserve requirement was introduced in response to observations of excessive speculative positioning on the buy side. He added that the other major announcement was essentially a re-articulation of existing requirements, largely procedural in nature, concerning the documentation required.

He further said that domestic growth is performing well across all fronts. Banks are well-capitalised, profitable and growing, indicating that the banking sector is in good health. He noted that there are initial signs of corporate investment, with companies remaining profitable and earnings growth improving. Household balance sheets are also resilient and strong. Although household leverage has increased, balance sheets remain robust. Overall, he said India’s macroeconomic fundamentals and financial institutions are robust. He also emphasised the need to closely monitor evolving geopolitical headwinds and their potential impact on the Indian economy.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 22747.05, up by 124.35 points or 0.55% after trading in a range of 22637.40 and 22780.85. There were 28 stocks advancing against 22 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Tech Mahindra up by 3.00%, TCS up by 2.43%, Infosys up by 2.39%, Bharti Airtel up by 2.12% and HCL Technologies up by 1.89%. On the flip side, Adani Enterprises down by 1.79%, Hindalco Industries down by 1.20%, Trent down by 1.18%, ONGC down by 1.05% and Bharat Electronics down by 0.99% were the top losers.
