Markets likely to make cautious start amid weak global cues

Indian equity markets are likely to make a cautious start on Thursday following weakness in global markets, amid rising US Treasury yields. Some cautiousness may come amid rise in international crude oil prices in early deals. Sentiments may remain subdued as foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued their selling spree, offloading equities worth Rs 6,121.37 crore on Wednesday.  

Some of the key factors to be watched: 

Jaishankar discusses India-Cote d'Ivoire bilateral ties: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with Cote d'Ivoire's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Niale Kaba on strengthening bilateral ties, with a focus on trade, infrastructure, agriculture and healthcare.

India, UK boost trade & investment via financial dialogue: India and the UK have reaffirmed the important role of the Financial Markets Dialogue (FMD) in supporting sustainable growth, deeper trade and investment ties, and resilient financial markets. 

RBI expects large part of surplus liquidity to be absorbed within FY27: RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said that the huge banking system liquidity is to be absorbed within the current financial year through various means such as currency leakage, the RBI's liquidity operations and banks' reserve requirements.

Higher borrowing costs could increase financial burden on exporters: Apex exporters body FIEO said higher borrowing costs could increase the financial burden on exporters, particularly MSMEs, at a time when global trade is facing heightened uncertainty. The statement came in the backdrop of the RBI raising the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5 per cent.

Electric car sales jump nearly two-fold to 36,108 units in September: The Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA) said electric passenger vehicle retail sales nearly doubled in September to 36,108 units from 18,559 units in the corresponding month last year, even as the overall EV sales surged a whopping 74 per cent year-on-year to 3,33,364 units in the previous month.

Global front: The U.S. markets ended lower on Wednesday as long-dated US Treasury yields resumed their climb, reviving fears about inflation and mounting debt. Asian markets are trading mostly in red on Thursday following the broadly negative cues from Wall Street overnight.

Back home, Indian equity benchmarks closed lower on Wednesday, after two straight days of gains, as the RBI raised the key policy rate for the first time in nearly four years. Rising crude oil prices and persistent foreign fund outflows also hit market sentiment. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,961.30 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data. Finally, the BSE Sensex fell 429.11 points or 0.59% to 72,638.70 and the CNX Nifty was down by 173.05 points or 0.76% to 22,603.05.

RBI hikes repo rate by 25 bps to 5.5% amid rising inflation, West Asia crisis: After nearly three-and-half years, the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously decided to increase the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.50 per cent, in a bid to tame rising inflation amid continuing West Asia crisis. 

India's manufacturing sentiment improved in July-September quarter: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) Survey has said that India's manufacturing sentiment improved in Q2FY27 as factories reported higher capacity utilisation and higher or same levels of production as compared to the previous quarter.

India, Switzerland hold discussions on fast-tracking Bilateral Investment Treaty: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has held discussions with Swiss President Guy Parmelin on issues of common interest to both India and Switzerland, including taking forward negotiations on the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) which is mutually beneficial to both nations.
