Rajya Sabha polls have set tone for UP Assembly polls: Yogi Adityanath
Oct-07-2026

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the Rajya Sabha elections in the state have set the tone for the 2027 Assembly polls, claiming the ‘80 versus 20’ political battle was back, with 80 per cent of the electorate with the NDA and 20 per cent with the opposition's PDA.

Yogi Adityanath said, ‘The Rajya Sabha election (nominations) in Uttar Pradesh showed what the result of the Assembly election is going to be. The 80 versus 20 fight has returned. Eighty per cent is with the NDA and 20 per cent with the PDA, and what is going to happen to the PDA will again be before you’. Yogi Adityanath made the comments while addressing the ‘Seva Jyoti Yatra-Viksit Bharat Sankalp Sabha’ in Lucknow, which marks Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s completion of 25 years in elected office. PM Modi and BJP national president Nitin Nabin addressed the programme virtually, while Yogi Adityanath also visited an exhibition titled ‘Service to the Nation through Public Service’.

His remarks were made a day after eight BJP candidates and two Samajwadi Party candidates filed their nominations for the 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had hinted at fielding a third candidate but on the last date of nomination on Tuesday he said it’s his party's focus is not on three seats but on the 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. The SP chief first floated the abbreviation PDA - Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (backward classes, Dalits, and minorities) -in June 2023. The formulation was projected as the SP’s social coalition against the BJP-led NDA, with Akhilesh repeatedly claiming, “PDA hi NDA ko harayega (it is the PDA that will defeat the NDA)’.

The BJP candidates, who filed their papers on Tuesday were Dharampal Singh, Prakash Pal, Shruti Gangwar, Vidya Sagar Sonkar, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Radhakant Ojha, Gopi Krishna Pandey and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan. The SP nominees are veteran leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani.

The Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled for October 16, with the terms of the sitting members from the 10 Uttar Pradesh seats due to expire on November 25.
