Left parties protest at EC headquarters, demand CEC Gyanesh Kumar's removal

Left party leaders held a protest outside the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. 

Those who took part in the protest included CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby, Brinda Karat, CPI leader and NFIW president Nisha Sidhu, and CPI(ML) Liberation central committee members Sucheta De and Shweta Raj. During the march M.A. Baby and others were manhandled and detained by the Delhi Police. Baby raised slogans: ‘Gyanesh Kumar should resign or be removed. We cannot allow him to continue’.

The demonstration was part of a week-long nationwide agitation from 26 September to 2 October coordinated by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI(ML) Liberation, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), and the All India Forward Bloc. The parties are demanding Kumar’s removal and an immediate halt to the SIR, alleging that the exercise threatens citizens’ voting rights.

CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali said the Left would hold daily demonstrations across the country until its demands over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls were addressed. She said the agitation would not be limited to the current week and would continue for as long as the Left parties considered necessary. Ali also accused the government of taking away fundamental rights and linked the issue directly to the right to vote.

During the protest, Senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat strongly criticized the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded the immediate suspension of Kumar.Karat also called for changes to the rules governing the Election Commission.

Congress has separately demanded Kumar’s removal and suspension of the revision exercise, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation on moral grounds over what he alleged was pressure on the CEC.

The controversy has intensified following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over 10 months concerning decisions and orders related to the SIR.
