Sep-29-2026

Indian equity benchmarks failed to hold recovery and again added losses in early afternoon deals, as rising oil prices and foreign investor selling pressured markets despite faster industrial output growth in August. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in its quick estimates has shown that industrial growth rose to 8.0 percent in the month of August 2026 (Base 2022-23=100) from a revised growth of 7.4 percent in July 2026 led by robust growth in manufacturing and electricity generation.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in red, after Japan's leading index improved less than initially estimated in July to the strongest level in twelve-and-a-half years. The latest data from the Cabinet Office showed that the leading index, which measures future economic activity, climbed to 117.7 in July from 116.2 in the previous month. The flash reading was 117.9.

Goyal will visit the US from September 29 to October 5, and also join a G20 trade ministers' meeting in Wisconsin, at the invitation of US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. In US, he will meet chief executives of leading American companies in manufacturing, consumer goods, agri-business, retail and technology, and participate in roundtables with businesses, startups and innovative companies. Further, he will highlight the opportunities India offers as a manufacturing and investment destination and invite American companies to deepen their partnerships with Indian enterprises.

Goyal’s US visit is important as both countries are yet to reach a consensus on a trade agreement, after months of talking, with India holding out for a better deal. Besides, his visit comes at a time when bilateral ties between both countries experiencing friction after US President Trump signed the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which authorises him to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian oil and gas, including China and India.

His visit is expected to further strengthen the trade and investment partnership between India and the United States and deepen India's engagement with its G20 partners. The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an international forum that brings together the world's major advanced and emerging economies to discuss and coordinate economic policy. The United States holds the 2026 G20 presidency. US President Donald Trump will host the G20 Summit on December 14-15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort in Doral, Florida.
