No coal shortage in India despite rising thermal power demand: Reddy
Sep-29-2026

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has said there is no shortage of coal in India even as higher thermal power demand, monsoon-related disruptions in mining and lower hydropower generation. Reddy stated ‘There is no shortage of coal. We are supplying by rakes and road’.

He said thermal power demand had risen by around 12-15 per cent due to a decline in hydropower generation, while monsoon conditions had also affected coal mining operations. Besides, he said the temporary disruptions should not be construed as a coal shortage and asserted that the overall situation was normal.

Earlier in this month, he had said that the coal companies have 100 million tonnes of coal in transit, and power companies have 23 days of coal stock. The production of coal increased with a reduction in rains in the country.
