Post Session: Quick Review
Sep-22-2026

Indian equity markets failed to hold early gains and ended in the red on Tuesday, as investors kept an eye on the latest developments in West Asia and awaited the outcome of the Trump-Xi meeting in Washington on Thursday, with trade, AI, and geopolitics dominating the agenda. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he was open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York this week.

The Sensex and Nifty ended lower as weakness in financial and technology stocks weighed on the indices. Market participants maintained a cautious stance ahead of the weekly expiry of Nifty F&O contracts.

Some of the important factors in trade:

FIIs turns net sellers: Traders remained cautious as exchange data showed foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers on Monday, offloading equities worth Rs 576.20 crore.

Nine key infrastructure sectors’ output growth slows to 4.8% in August: Some concerns also came as the Ministry of Commerce & Industry in its latest data showed that nine key infrastructure sectors’ output growth slowed down to 4.8 per cent in August 2026 due to a fall in the output of coal, natural gas, crude oil, and fertiliser. The output expanded by 6.2 per cent in August 2025 and by 5 per cent in July 2026.

RBI accepts Rs 25,000 crore bids in second tranche of OMO sale: In the second tranche of its open market operation (OMO) sale of government securities, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has accepted bids worth Rs 25,000 crore, as it stepped up efforts to absorb surplus liquidity from the banking system.

On the global front: European stocks were trading higher amid easing inflation concerns and hopes of a resumption in U.S.-Iran negotiations. Asian markets closed mostly higher, following broadly positive cues from Wall Street overnight. Falling oil prices and easing U.S. Treasury yields helped support investor sentiment.

The BSE Sensex ended at 74529.08, down by 329.91 points or 0.44% after trading in a range of 74423.71 and 75038.93. There were 9 stocks advancing against 21 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, with an aim to fast-track process of trade agreement, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that the negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada are progressing and the next round of talks will be held from October 5, 2026. The fourth round of negotiations concluded on September 18, 2026. Canada's International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu was in Mumbai last week to hold talks with Goyal. The talks are moving at a faster pace as both the countries are targeting to conclude the negotiations by end of this year.

India's major exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronic goods and chemicals. Key imports from Canada include pulses, pearls and semi-precious stones, coal, fertilisers, paper and crude petroleum. India's services exports to Canada are led by telecommunications, computer and information services, and other business services. Two-way trade reached $30.4 billion in 2025 and the target is double that to $70 billion by 2030.

On India-EU trade pact, Goyal said it is expected to come into force in the coming months. He said the pact is likely to be ratified by the EU parliament in the next three months or so and is likely to come in to effect within the next six-seven months. On the India-Chile trade agreement, he said Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal recently visited Chile to review the progress of talks. He added “I believe in the coming few months, we will hear some good news”.

The CNX Nifty ended at 23329.00, down by 85.30 points or 0.36% after trading in a range of 23285.75 and 23489.00. There were 15 stocks advancing against 35 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gainers on Nifty were Coal India up by 3.21%, Eternal up by 1.82%, Interglobe Aviation up by 1.80%, Titan Company up by 1.10% and Dr Reddy's Laboratories up by 1.06%. On the flip side, Tata Consumer Products down by 1.65%, Nestle India down by 1.52%, Bajaj Finserv down by 1.43%, Bajaj Finance down by 1.22% and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries down by 1.20% were the top losers. (Provisional)

European markets were trading higher; Germany’s DAX gained 161.79 points or 0.63% to 25,736.80, France’s CAC rose 33.06 points or 0.41% to 8,172.00 and UK’s FTSE 100 increased 15.84 points or 0.15% to 10,754.85.

Asian markets settled mostly higher on Tuesday tracking overnight gains on Wall Street fuelled by a rally in artificial intelligence-related stocks, while falling Brent crude prices and lower US Treasury yields also supported market sentiment. Market sentiments improved further amid rising expectation of a diplomatic solution to the US-Iran conflict ahead of closely watched United Nations General Assembly talks in New York. Meanwhile, market participants awaited speeches from Fed officials John Williams and Tom Barkin scheduled later today, for more interest rate related cues. Chinese markets inched up amid optimism over high-level US-China trade and AI talks ahead of the upcoming Trump-Xi summit in the United States. Japanese markets were closed for an extended holiday and trading will resume on Thursday.
