Sensex, Nifty trade tad higher in early deals
Sep-22-2026

Indian equity benchmarks made a positive start on Tuesday supported by easing crude oil prices, softer US bond yields and positive global market cues. Sentiment improved on hopes of a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to be in New York this week for the UN General Assembly. But soon markets turned volatile as continued foreign selling and geopolitical tensions kept gains in check. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers on Monday, offloading equities worth Rs 576.20 crore.

Sensex and Nifty were trading marginally higher in early deals on account of value buying. However, gains remained capped due to selling pressure in IT and Teck counters. Traders were cautious as the latest government data showed that production growth of nine key infrastructure sectors slowed down to 4.8 per cent in August due to a fall in the output of coal, natural gas, crude oil, and fertilizer.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly higher tracking a strong overnight rally on Wall Street, as gains in technology stocks and easing crude oil prices supported investor sentiment. Markets were also watching a high-level meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week. Japan’s markets remained closed for a public holiday.

Meanwhile, with an aim to fast-track process of trade agreement, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that the negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada are progressing and the next round of talks will be held from October 5, 2026. The fourth round of negotiations concluded on September 18, 2026. Canada's International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu was in Mumbai last week to hold talks with Goyal. The talks are moving at a faster pace as both the countries are targeting to conclude the negotiations by end of this year.

India's major exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronic goods and chemicals. Key imports from Canada include pulses, pearls and semi-precious stones, coal, fertilisers, paper and crude petroleum. India's services exports to Canada are led by telecommunications, computer and information services, and other business services. Two-way trade reached $30.4 billion in 2025 and the target is double that to $70 billion by 2030.

On India-EU trade pact, Goyal said it is expected to come into force in the coming months. He said the pact is likely to be ratified by the EU parliament in the next three months or so and is likely to come in to effect within the next six-seven months.
