TMC symbol row: Mamata gets 'Football Player' as emblem, Roy faction gets 'Envelope'
Sep-18-2026

The Election Commission (EC) has allotted the name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ to the faction led by Mamata Banerjee, while its rival group led by Arup Roy got the name 'Democratic Trinamool Congress'. According to the Election Commission order, the Mamata faction got 'Football Player' as its election symbol, while the group led by Roy got 'Envelope' as its poll emblem. The development comes a day after the poll panel barred both groups from using the party's name ‘All India Trinamool Congress’ and its ‘Flowers and Grass’ symbol ahead of bypolls in two assembly constituencies in West Bengal. The ECI in its order said, ‘Neither of the two groups led by Shri Arup Roy (Petitioner) and the other led by Ms Mamata Banerjee (Respondent) shall be permitted to use the name of the party 'All India Trinamool Congress’.

The Commission stated that both the groups are to be treated as recognised political parties in the States of West Bengal, Meghalaya and Tripura. The EC said the proposed names could be similar to AITC, while the symbols must be chosen from a list of free or available symbols notified for Independents and registered unrecognised political parties.

The poll panel said the time available was not enough to complete the proceedings under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, but noted the urgency for party name and symbol for the by-elections. The EC also said the interim arrangement was made specifically to cover the upcoming bypolls and would remain in force until the dispute is finally determined under Paragraph 15 of the Symbols Order. Assembly bypolls to Nandigram in East Medinipur district and Rejinagar in Murshidabad district are scheduled for October 6, with vote counting on October 9.
