Key gauges continue to trade lower in morning deals
Sep-11-2026

Indian equity benchmarks continued to trade lower in morning deals amid escalating tensions in West Asia and a surge in crude oil prices, raising concerns over the impact of higher energy costs on India's economic growth and corporate earnings. Weak trends in global markets and foreign fund outflows also dented investors' sentiment. Exchange data showed Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers on September 10, 2026, with a net outflow of Rs 438.24 crore. Traders overlooked report that Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra asserted that India has the opportunity to become a trusted partner in shaping the future architecture of global finance.

Both Sensex and Nifty were trading over half percent lower during morning deals, with broad-based selling in heavyweight stocks. Realty stocks were the weakest, followed by Metal and Basic Materials counters. However, gains in Telecom stocks helped cushion the decline. On the global front, Asian markets are trading lower following the negative cues from Wall Street overnight, as crude oil soars past $100 a barrel for the first time since May amid concerns of a prolonged war between the U.S. and Iran.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74360.06, down by 542.53 points or 0.72% after trading in a range of 74160.16 and 74433.46. There were 7 stocks advancing against 23 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Telecom up by 0.97%, TECK up by 0.49% and IT up by 0.22%, while Realty down by 4.04%, Metal down by 2.32%, Basic Materials down by 1.85%, Industrials down by 1.25% and Auto down by 1.17% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Tech Mahindra up by 1.70%, HCL Technologies up by 1.35%, Infosys up by 0.72%, Bharti Airtel up by 0.62% and ITC up by 0.62%. On the flip side, Tata Steel down by 1.83%, Bajaj Finance down by 1.82%, Ultratech Cement down by 1.75%, Interglobe Aviation down by 1.69% and Mahindra & Mahindra down by 1.65% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Crisil Ratings in its latest report has said that India’s organised apparel retail sector is expected to grow by 12-13 percent this fiscal (FY27), moderating from the 15 per cent growth recorded in the previous year, as consumers increasingly spread discretionary spending across categories beyond clothing. The report revenue growth has been broadly steady so far in the high single digits between April and August 2026, but has largely been driven by the value-fashion segment.

It stated the growth is expected to be driven by strong demand for value fashion, expansion of organised retail beyond big cities and continued preference for branded apparel. Credit profiles are expected to remain stable because retailers are pursuing calibrated expansion strategies in larger cities that do not strain balance sheets, and expansion in smaller cities requires a relatively lower capital outlay.

Further, it said higher cotton prices and rising operating costs are likely to squeeze margins, as intense competition may limit retailers' ability to pass on higher costs to consumers. Operating margins are expected to moderate by about 100 basis points, reaching 14% in the current fiscal year. The festive season, which has recently commenced, will be crucial to the sector's growth outlook as festive demand typically contributes nearly 35% of annual apparel sales.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23293.80, down by 184.00 points or 0.78% after trading in a range of 23231.40 and 23311.80. There were 9 stocks advancing against 41 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Tech Mahindra up by 1.49%, Nestle India up by 0.52%, HCL Technologies up by 0.48%, ITC up by 0.46% and Bharti Airtel up by 0.39%. On the flip side, Hindalco Industries down by 2.68%, Tata Steel down by 2.38%, Asian Paints down by 2.10%, Adani Enterprises down by 1.86% and Shriram Finance down by 1.83% were the top losers.

All Asian markets are trading lower; Nikkei 225 slipped 1402.95 points or 2.15% to 63,868.00, Taiwan Weighted lost 605.73 points or 1.29% to 46,334.76, Jakarta Composite plunged 98.43 points or 1.52% to 6,490.91, Shanghai Composite weakened 66.66 points or 1.69% to 3,867.74, KOSPI dropped 144.00 points or 2.05% to 6,889.92, Hang Seng declined 183.47 points or 0.74% to 24,771.00 and Straits Times fell 7.3 points or 0.13% to 5,682.45.
