India-US trade deal nears finalization: Commerce Secretary
Sep-10-2026

The India-US trade deal is nearing completion, with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal describing the deal as ‘more or less’ finalised. The two countries are now focusing on developing a framework for preferential market access before the agreement is signed at an appropriate time.

While some issues remain under discussion, Agrawal indicated that the pact will be signed at an appropriate time. He expressed need to ensure preferential access to each other’s markets under the proposed agreement. He noted that India largely operates under Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariffs, while the US is currently using executive tariffs, making it necessary to establish an architecture that provides differentials and preferential market access for India. Further, he said businesses in both countries were already engaging strongly and were satisfied with the broad understanding reached between the two governments.

Commerce Secretary also highlighted the continued progress in India’s other ongoing trade negotiations, stating that discussions on the India-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA) have reached an advanced stage. While some matters remain under consideration, the two sides are expected to make further progress over the next two to three months. He also stated that India is working towards operationalising the India-New Zealand FTA at the earliest, potentially in October.
