Key gauges continue to trade flat in morning deals
Sep-10-2026

Indian equity benchmarks continued to trade flat in morning deals, as escalating tensions in the Middle East kept crude oil prices above $100 a barrel, while investors awaited key US economic data ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week. However, traders took some support with NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri’s statement that the Indian economy has been doing reasonably well and that Asia’s third-largest economy will regain its mojo and return to a current account surplus soon.

Both the Sensex and Nifty struggled for direction and traded largely unchanged in morning deals, as gains in Oil & Gas, PSU and Banking stocks were offset by selling in Realty, Auto and Telecom stocks. Also, exchange data showed Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 582 crore on a net basis on Wednesday. On the global front, Asian markets were trading lower following the broadly negative cues from Wall Street overnight, as surging crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment and raised concerns over global inflation risks and the outlook for interest rates amid escalating US-Iran tensions and growing concerns over disruptions to Middle East energy supplies.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74742.26, down by 21.97 points or 0.03% after trading in a range of 74666.10 and 74910.96. There were 12 stocks advancing against 18 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Oil & Gas up by 0.52%, PSU up by 0.37%, Bankex up by 0.25%, Energy up by 0.20% and Consumer Durables up by 0.12%, while Realty down by 0.84%, Auto down by 0.76%, Telecom down by 0.75%, Capital Goods down by 0.71% and Industrials down by 0.38% were the top losing indices on BSE.

Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India’s merchandise exports grew by around 15 per cent during April-August this fiscal despite global uncertainties. Talking at the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance (WBA) Women-Led Development Summit 2026, he said that huge potential exists between India and BRICS nations to increase trade in goods and services. He stated ‘Despite all the turmoil that the world is going through today...we are well aware of the softening of internal trade. I am happy to share that our merchandise exports from India have grown between April and August, in the first five months of this fiscal, by upward of 15 per cent.’

The commerce ministry will release the exports and imports data for August formally on September 15. During April-July this fiscal, exports jumped 17.04 per cent to $173.78 billion, and imports climbed 19.27 per cent to $292.38 billion. Goyal suggested that BRICS members support women entrepreneurs through financial intermediaries. He said ‘If we can commit our governments to encourage women-owned enterprises to take greater part in international expositions, conferences, seminars, exhibitions, business forums, it will actually help us engage on many more platforms than an annual Women Business Alliance meeting.’

He urged BRICS countries to work collectively to create greater opportunities for women entrepreneurs and women-led businesses in international trade, emphasising the need for easier access to credit, markets and predictable rules of business. He mentioned that an entrepreneur seeking to enter international business has to cross three key borders: access to credit, access to buyers and markets, and access to predictable rules that encourage free trade and open opportunities.
