Jul-21-2026

Rajya Sabha (RS) proceedings were adjourned for the day soon after it met for the post-lunch sitting, amid the Opposition's protest over police lathi charge on students protesting the NEET examination paper leak.

Earlier in the day, when the proceedings of the Upper House began at 11:00 AM, the Union Ministers laid the papers of their concerned ministry. Chairman C P Radhakrishnan allowed the Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, to speak on the matter he wants to raise. Kharge raised the issue of police action against students who took to the streets on Monday over the leak of medical entrance examination question papers. Kharge alleged that police had lathi-charged the protesters and used tear gas against them. His remarks prompted slogan-shouting from treasury bench members, with Opposition MPs responding with counter-slogans. Amid the uproar, Chairman C P Radhakrishnan adjourned the House till 12 noon.

When the House met again at noon, Secretary General P C Mody read out a message from the Lok Sabha amid continuing commotion. Mody informed the House that the Lok Sabha, in its sitting on Monday, had adopted a motion recommending that the Rajya Sabha elect two members to a joint committee on offices of profit to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of N R Elango and Deepak Prakash. With members continuing to protest, the Chairman adjourned the House for the second time till 2 pm.

As soon as the House met after the second adjournment at 2:00 PM, Deputy Chairman Harivansh tried to take up the scheduled business, but the opposition members raised slogans and continued with their protest. Harivansh appealed to all members to allow the smooth functioning of the House, but of no use. Amid the ruckus, the house was adjourned till tomorrow at 11 AM.

The same scene was also witnessed in the Lok Sabha.
