Indian rupee strengthens against dollar on Friday
Jul-17-2026

Indian rupee has strengthened against the US dollar on Friday as investors remained optimistic after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that India and the European Union (EU) have agreed to sign the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of calendar year 2026. He noted that the pact is likely to come into force in the first quarter of 2027, likely during February-March. He added that the agreement would create a wide range of opportunities for businesses on both sides. Traders paid no heed to the escalating geopolitical tensions and persistent fund outflows by foreign institutional investors (FIIs). The FIIs were the net sellers on Thursday’s session, offloading securities worth Rs 4,205.56 crore. On the global front, the British pound has weakened against the US dollar on Friday as traders shifted their focus on Andy Burnham’s choice of Chancellor after he was officially confirmed as the new leader of the UK Labour Party and is expected to become prime minister next week.

Finally, the rupee ended at 96.29 (Provisional), strengthened by 13 paise from its previous close of 96.42 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 96.41 and 92.26 respectively.
