Congress to join NC's July 20 statehood protest in Delhi: JKPCC chief Tariq Hamid Karra
Jul-17-2026

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hamid Karra announced that the Congress will participate in the National Conference’s proposed July 20 protest in New Delhi demanding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Tariq Karra said the National Conference had invited senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, to join the demonstration at Jantar Mantar. He added ‘Statehood represents the aspirations, emotions and sentiments of 1.4 crore people of Jammu and Kashmir. Any individual, NGO or political party that wants to join this movement is welcome’.

The JKPCC chief further said the party's state unit had independently launched a movement titled 'Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq' (Our State, Our Right) a year ago. He said they first took the movement to all 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir to build public awareness, followed by demonstrations in all districts, including Jammu and Srinagar.

Tariq Karra asserted that the campaign for the restoration of statehood was originally initiated by the Congress and said the party would continue to intensify its efforts if the Centre failed to fulfil its commitment. He also revealed that the Congress is planning a march from Lakhanpur to Lolab to press for the restoration of statehood.

Responding to remarks by senior Congress leader Saifuddin Soz on Article 370, Karra reiterated that the party had already distanced itself from the statement, saying Soz’s views were personal and did not reflect the official stand of the Congress.
