Three BJP candidates file nomination papers for RS bypolls in Bengal
Jul-13-2026

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s three candidates —Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik — filed their nomination papers before the Returning Officer for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-elections from West Bengal.

The development comes days after the three former MPs of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) formally joined the BJP at the party’s Salt Lake office last Thursday in the presence of Bhattacharya. Soon after, the BJP’s central leadership in Delhi announced their candidature for the Rajya Sabha by-polls.

After filing her nomination, Sushmita Dev thanked the BJP leadership and legislators for reposing faith in her and described the reception she had received in the party as akin to ‘a family’. She said Adhikari had asked her to actively participate in debates in the Rajya Sabha and work in coordination with the party's legislators.

The Election Commission has scheduled polling for July 24, with the last date for filing nominations set for July 14. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on July 15. With the BJP now holding a majority in the West Bengal Assembly, the party is widely expected to secure all three Rajya Sabha seats, strengthening its presence in the Upper House.
