Union minister George Kurian quits after expiry of Rajya Sabha term
Jun-23-2026

Union minister and veteran BJP leader from Kerala George Kurian resigned from the Union Council of Ministers following expiry of his Rajya Sabha term.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement that President Droupadi Murmu has accepted Kurian’s resignation under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP has nominated Tarun Chugh and Rajneesh Agrawal for the two seats now falling vacant, signalling that Kurian was not considered for renomination.

Sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Mr. Kurian is likely to return to active organisational responsibilities and has conveyed his interest in working in Kerala to the party leadership.

Kurian, a senior BJP leader from Kerala, had been serving as MoS for Minority Affairs and for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying since June 2024. He was probably the only minister in the Union government who belongs to the Christian community. His Rajya Sabha tenure ended on June 21.

Two Union ministers -- Ravneet Singh Bittu and Kurian --- were not renominated for the June 18 Rajya Sabha elections even though their tenures were coming to an end.
