Govt reports 8.8% growth in GST collection for March

The government data has showed that total Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection increased to over Rs 2,00,064 crore in March 2026 as compared to Rs 1,83,845 crore in March 2025, a growth of 8.8%, aided by tax mop-ups from domestic sales as well as imports. Of the total, gross domestic revenue was Rs 1,46,202 crore (a growth of 5.9% over previous year) and gross import revenue was Rs 53,861 crore (a growth of 17.8% over previous year). 

Of the total gross GST revenue, CGST (Central GST) was Rs 40,549 crore, SGST (State GST) was Rs 53,268 crore and IGST (Integrated GST) was Rs 1,06,246 crore. Total Refund issuance during March rose 13.8% to Rs 22,074 crore. After adjusting refunds, net GST revenues in March 2026 stood at about Rs 1,77,990 crore, up 8.2% as compared to Rs 1,64,445 crore in the same month of previous year.

March 2026 saw the third-highest collection in the 2025-26 fiscal (April-March), with April 2025 recording the highest-ever GST revenues at over Rs 2.36 lakh crore, followed by May’s collection at over Rs 2.01 lakh crore. For the full 2025-26 fiscal, GST collections grew 8.3% Y-o-Y to Rs 22,27,096 crore.

Meanwhile, GST rates on about 375 items were slashed, making goods cheaper, effective September 2025. Also, four tax slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% were merged into two of 5% and 18%, with the highest 40% slab for a select few ultra luxury goods and tobacco products.
