Refunds slow down drives net direct tax collection to register 8% growth so far

Slow down in refund issuances drove net direct tax collection to grow 8% at Rs 17.04 lakh crore during April 1 to December 17, 2025 period, over same period last year. During the period, gross direct tax collection rose 4.16% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) to around Rs 20.01 lakh crore, while Refunds fell 13.52% YoY to around Rs 2.97 lakh crore. 

The corporate tax (CT) collection recorded a growth of 7.54% to around Rs 9.95 lakh crore during April 1 to December 17, 2025 as compared to around Rs 9.25 lakh crore in same period last year. Further, the non - corporate tax collection (NCT) grew 1.31% to around Rs 9.67 lakh crore in April to December period as compared to around Rs 9.54 lakh crore in same period last year. The collection of Securities Transaction Tax (STT) stood at around Rs 40.20 thousand crore, growing marginally on Y-o-Y basis, while the other taxes (OT) collection slumped 88.03% Y-o-Y to Rs 338.57 crore.

During April to December of 2025, the advance tax collection increased 4.27% to around Rs 7.89 lakh crore as compared to around Rs 7.56 lakh crore in same period last year. During the period, the advance tax collection of Corporate Tax grew 7.98% Y-o-Y to around Rs 6.07 lakh crore, while advance tax collection of Non - Corporate Tax declined 6.49% Y-o-Y to around Rs 1.81 lakh crore.
