Markets continue to witness weakness in late morning deals

Indian equity markets continued to witness weakness and were trading lower with cut of over half percent in late morning deals as market participants indulged in reducing their positions. Meanwhile, the session was also proving weak for broader indices with BSE Mid cap index and Small cap index falling in the range of 0.70-0.80%. Sentiments were weak following Trump's tariff doubling, increasing it to 50% on Indian exports to the US. Meanwhile, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has said that the US decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods is ‘extremely shocking’ and will impact 55 per cent of India's exports to America. All the sectoral indices on the BSE were trading in red led by Materials, Metal, Capital Goods, Industrials and Power.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading higher following positive cues from the US markets overnight. Back home, in the stock specific development, Axis Solution surged as the company has secured an order for water supply project scheme from Sarala Projects Works. 

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 80091.43, down by 452.56 points or 0.56% after trading in a range of 79979.05 and 80421.84. There were 5 stocks advancing against 25 stocks declining on the index.

The broader indices were trading in red; the BSE Mid cap index was down by 0.70%, while Small cap index down by 0.78%.

The top losing sectoral indices on the BSE were Basic Materials down by 1.08%, Metal down by 1.04%, Capital Goods down by 1.03%, Industrials down by 1.00% and Power down by 0.96%, while there were no gainers. 

The top gainers on the Sensex were ITC up by 0.25%, Power Grid up by 0.18%, Eternal up by 0.15%, Axis Bank up by 0.05% and HDFC Bank up by 0.02%. On the flip side, Adani Ports down by 2.62%, Tata Motors down by 2.35%, Tata Steel down by 1.35%, Sun Pharma down by 1.12% and Bajaj Finserv down by 1.10% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has said that the ministry is underway to revise the base year of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Index Industrial Production (IIP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI). In order to capture the structural changes happening in the economy, the base year is revised periodically by updating the methodology of compilation and incorporation of new data sources.

The year 2022-23 has been proposed as new base year for the GDP and IIP, meanwhile, for CPI the proposed base year is 2024. For the CPI, list of items and their respective weights derived from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey of 2023-24 is used in the revised index. 

The Ministry has conducted its first Forward-Looking Survey on Private Corporate Sector CAPEX Investment Intentions from November 2024 to January 2025 and the findings of the survey have been published. Further, ministry has conducted a Pilot Study on Annual Survey of Services Sector Enterprises (ASSSE) to capture insights into the Incorporated Service Sector. The decision to conduct the next Economic Census is yet to be taken.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 24424.15, down by 150.05 points or 0.61% after trading in a range of 24387.55 and 24542.90. There were 5 stocks advancing against 45 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Hero MotoCorp up by 1.35%, HDFC Life Insurance up by 0.26%, ITC up by 0.19%, Eternal up by 0.12% and Power Grid up by 0.11%. On the flip side, Adani Ports down by 2.68%, Tata Motors down by 2.46%, Adani Enterprises down by 2.32%, JIO Financial down by 1.67% and Shriram Finance down by 1.64% were the top losers.

All Asian markets were trading higher; Nikkei 225 surged 228.14 points or 0.56 to 41,023.00, Hang Seng advanced 113.37 points or 0.45 to 25,024.00, Straits Times rose 33.82 points or 0.79 to 4,261.52, Taiwan Weighted added 556.41 points or 2.32 to 24,003.77, Shanghai Composite strengthened 6.74 points or 0.19 to 3,640.73, Jakarta Composite gained 37.02 points or 0.49 to 7,540.77 and KOSPI increased 17.98 points or 0.56 to 3,216.12.
