Government convenes all party meeting on Saturday ahead of Parliament Session
Nov-30-2023

Ahead of the Winter session of Parliament, the government has called a meeting of leaders of political parties in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Saturday. This meeting will be chaired by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi which is expected to be attended by senior leaders including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

The winter session of Parliament will begin from December 4 and is proposed to continue till December 22. During this period there will be 15 sittings, in which key draft legislations including three bills to replace the colonial era criminal laws, are expected to be considered. At present there are 37 bills pending in Parliament, out of which 12 are listed for discussion and passing and 7 bills are listed for introduction, discussion and passing. The government also plans to present the first batch of supplementary demands for grants for the year 2023-24.

In this session, the Ethics Committee report on the allegations of 'asking questions for money' against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra will be presented in the Lok Sabha. Also, the three key bills which seek to replace the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Evidence Act are likely to be taken up for consideration during the session. Another important bill related to the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners is also pending in Parliament. It was introduced in the monsoon session, but the government had not pushed for its passage in the special session of Parliament amid opposition from opposition members and former Chief Election Commissioners as it seeks to bring on a par the status of the CEC and ECs with that of the cabinet secretary.
