Markets extend losses in late afternoon session

Indian equity markets extended their losses in late afternoon session. Both Sensex and Nifty were trading below their crucial 60800 and 18100 marks, respectively. The broader indices, the BSE Mid cap index and Small cap index were also trading in red. Sentiments remained down-beat even after Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in its data report has showed that the value of participatory notes (P-notes) investments in Indian markets -- equity, debt and hybrid securities -- was at Rs 97,751 crore by September-end compared to Rs 97,744 crore by August-end. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mixed after Malaysia's consumer prices inflation rose in September. Consumer price inflation rose to 2.2 percent in September from 2.0 percent in August. Street had expected the inflation rise 2.1 percent. European markets were trading higher helped by an easing of worries surrounding embattled property group China Evergrande as well as positive corporate earnings, notably French cosmetics giant L'Oreal.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 60731.13, down by 192.37 points or 0.32% after trading in a range of 60551.15 and 61420.13. There were 11 stocks advancing against 19 stocks declining on the index.

The broader indices were trading in red; the BSE Mid cap index declined 0.87%, while Small cap index was down by 1.28%.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Realty up by 1.92%, Bankex up by 1.07%, Consumer Durables up by 0.30% and Energy was up by 0.23%, while Metal down by 3.11%, Basic Materials down by 1.91%, IT down by 1.58%, Healthcare down by 1.55% and FMCG was down by 1.50% were the top  losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were HDFC up by 2.12%, Bajaj Auto up by 2.08%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 1.99%, Axis Bank up by 1.34% and Titan Company up by 1.31%. On the flip side, ITC down by 3.55%, Tata Steel down by 2.30%, Asian Paints down by 2.21%, Infosys down by 2.02% and NTPC down by 1.66% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in its data report has showed that the value of participatory notes (P-notes) investments in Indian markets -- equity, debt and hybrid securities -- was at Rs 97,751 crore by September-end compared to Rs 97,744 crore by August-end.

The report further noted that out of the total Rs 97,751 crore invested through the route till September, Rs 86,624 crore was invested in equities, Rs 10,873 crore in debt, Rs 547 crore in hybrid securities and Rs 68 crore in derivatives.

The figure for July was revised to Rs 85,799 crore from Rs 1,01,798 crore posted earlier. Prior to that, investment level was at Rs 92,261 crore by June-end, Rs 89,743 crore by May-end, Rs 88,447 crore at April-end and Rs 89,100 crore by March-end.

P-notes are issued by registered foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to overseas investors who wish to be a part of the Indian stock market without registering themselves directly. They, however, need to go through a due diligence process.

 The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 18087.00, down by 91.10 points or 0.50% after trading in a range of 18034.35 and 18314.25. There were 14 stocks advancing against 36 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were HDFC up by 2.14%, Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 2.06%, Bajaj Auto up by 2.02%, ONGC up by 1.97% and Axis Bank up by 1.65%. On the flip side, Hindalco down by 4.85%, ITC down by 3.37%, Tata Motors down by 2.85%, Coal India down by 2.82% and Tata Steel down by 2.27% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mixed, Nikkei 225 surged 96.27 points or 0.34% to 28,804.85, Hang Seng increased 109.40 points or 0.42% to 26,126.93, Jakarta Composite soared 10.77 points or 0.16% to 6,643.74 and Straits Times was up by 14.19 points or 0.45% to 3,202.69. On the flip side,  KOSPI fell 1.17 points or 0.04% to 3,006.16, Taiwan Weighted dropped 0.77 points or 0% to 16,888.74 and Shanghai Composite was down by 12.18 points or 0.34% to 3,582.60.

European markets were trading higher, UK’s FTSE 100 increased 31.55 points or 0.44% to 7,221.85, France’s CAC increased 77.25 points or 1.16% to 6,763.42 and Germany’s DAX was up by 90.55 points or 0.59% to 15,563.11.
