Area coverage under summer crops down by 3% to 69.97 lakh hectares in current year 2023

The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare in its latest data has showed that area coverage under summer crops came down to 69.97 lakh hectares in the Current Year 2023 (as on May 19, 2023) as compared to 71.92 lakh hectares in the Last Year 2022, down by 2.71%. The sowing area under Pulses and Shri Anna -cum -Coarse Cereals is higher year-on-year (Y-o-Y), while that for Rice, Oilseeds the acreage is lower.

As per the data, sowing area under Pulses, which include Greengram and Blackgram, increased by 3.77% to 19.81 lakh hectares in 2023 over 19.09 lakh hectares in 2022. Besides, acreage for Shri Anna -cum -Coarse Cereals, which include Jowar, Bajra, Ragi and Maize, rose 3.38% to 11.93 lakh hectares for the year 2023 as against 11.54 lakh hectares in the previous year.

On the other hand, the acreage for Rice came down to 28.07 lakh hectares for the period under review as compared to 30.28 lakh hectares in the same period a year ago, down by 7.30%. Also, acreage for oilseeds, which include Groundnut, Sunflower and Sesamum, declined by 7.71% to 10.17 lakh hectares for the reporting period as compared to 11.02 lakh hectares in the corresponding period of last year.
