Government targets 170 million tonnes of coal production in FY25
Apr-15-2024

The government of India is aiming 170 million tonnes (MT) of coal production from captive and commercial coal blocks in the country during FY25. In FY24, captive and commercial coal blocks produced 147.12 MT of dry fuel, 26 per cent higher from 116 MT produced in FY23.

Out of the total output of 147.2 MT in FY24, power sector captive mines produced around 121.3 MT and captive mines of the non-power sector produced 8.4 MT, while commercial mines generated 17.5 MT of fuel.

As of February 29, 2024, the total number of producing mines was 54, with 35 allocated to the power sector, 11 allocated to the non-regulated sector, and 8 for the sale of coal. Of the 91 mines awarded under commercial coal auctions, seven blocks have already started production. The Ministry of Coal is focused on sustaining this growth trajectory and the aim is to further streamline operations and bolster the infrastructure to meet the rising energy demands of the nation.  The government is aiming for zero import of coal by 2026.
