Non-life insurers’ gross direct premium underwritten shows growth of 12% in August

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 11.75% growth in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 26644.64 crore for the month of August 2026 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 23842.10 crore in the August 2025. Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 84.55%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 22267.50 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 20484.87 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 8.70%. 

Among other major players, premium of HDFC Ergo General Insurance Co soared 58.42% Y-o-Y to Rs 1709.98 crore in August 2026; premium of Acko General Insurance jumped 42.72% Y-o-Y to Rs 284.59 crore; premium of Zuno General Insurance Co surged 35.07% Y-o-Y to Rs 125.75 crore; premium of IFFCO-Tokio General Insurance Co rose 34.74% Y-o-Y to Rs 1047.72 crore; premium of Zurich Kotak Mahindra General Insurance Co advanced 28.63% Y-o-Y to Rs 202.72 crore; premium of SBI General Insurance Co increased 27.56% Y-o-Y to Rs 1873.47 crore; and premium of Royal Sundaram General Insurance Co was up by 24.20% Y-o-Y to Rs 417.7 crore. On the other hand, premium of Generali Central Insurance Company slipped 37.90% Y-o-Y to Rs 288.86 crore; premium of Universal Sompo General Insurance Co declined 29.06% Y-o-Y to Rs 444.12 crore; premium of IndusInd General Insurance Company fell 14.04% Y-o-Y to Rs 789.49 crore; and premium of The Oriental Insurance Co was down by 6.79% Y-o-Y to Rs 1135.79 crore.

Besides, standalone health insurers, with market share of 14.45%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 4377.14 crore in August 2026 as compared to Rs 3357.23 crore in August 2025, i.e. up by 30.38%. Among all, premium of Galaxy Health Insurance Company jumped more than doubled to Rs 24.06 crore; Care Health Insurance at Rs 1049.97 crore up by 40.89%; ManipalCigna Health Insurance Co at Rs 202.54 crore up by 38.84%; Niva Bupa health insurance company at Rs 842.84 crore up by 37.51%; Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co at Rs 546.08 crore up by 30.84%; and Star Health & Allied Insurance Co at Rs 1708.52 crore up by 19.90%; while premium of Narayana Health Insurance stood at Rs 2.95 crore down by 8.39%. 

Moreover, specialised insurers (market share 1.01%) showed de-growth of 26.79% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 809.88 crore in August 2026 as compared to Rs 1106.21 crore in the August 2025. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India fell by 32.64% to Rs 680.43 crore, while premium of ECGC was up by 34.84% to Rs 129.45 crore.
